After reading Is Art a Waste of Time last week, I ended up visiting the Effective Altruism website. It was an interesting experience. They had 3 or 4 pages that repeated their core mantra over and over, as well as 2 guides to join the group. Nothing on their website changed my opinion of Effective Altruism. I still feel they obsess over the wrong things- money- in life too often, and end up miss the people they are trying to save.
For me, glossing over the text a second time was a valuable experience. I missed a few subtleties in the author’s opinions that I did not pick up before, such as the mention of specific charities. Glossing the text also motivated me to look up words I was unfamiliar with- like Übermensch – rather than relying on context alone.
